WSA Announce Coolness Sign Design Competition Winners
DENVER – The 2020 WSA Coolness Sign Design Competition concluded during the association’s Virtual Annual Meeting earlier this month. WSA sign company members and endorsed vendors voted on the most innovative electrical signs produced during the past 12 months. The winning entries are in four categories: Freestanding Sign – Greater than 100 Square Feet, Freestanding Sign – Less than 100 Square Feet, Wall Sign and Potpourri. There is also a Best in Show recipient.
Best in Show/Freestanding Sign – Greater than 100 Square Feet: Deputy Zack Parrish III Memorial Park
BSC Signs and BSC Custom, located in Broomfield, Colo., fabricated and installed a memorial for deputy Zack S. Parrish III, a Douglas County Colo. Sheriff’s Deputy and former Castle Rock Police Officer, who lost his life in the line of duty on December 31, 2017. This memorial also honors the Castle Rock Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
The entire structure consists of three custom steel monument signs at 32” tall by 29’ in length and three custom freestanding light fixtures at 7’ tall by 3’ in diameter. All structures were fabricated from 1/8” hot rolled steel sheet and contain internal steel framework. Fixtures were intended to have a raw metal look and were finished with a mild tinted/blackened clear coat to give the pieces a gun metal appearance. All fixtures have multiple compound curves and angles which had to be fabricated and designed with great precision so everything could come together perfectly and look great. The fixtures were illuminated with internal LED. The three freestanding light fixtures project a 7-sided star onto the concrete, which symbolizes the seven points of a police officer’s badge. The memorial plaque copy was sandblasted into the steel and top-coated with tinted clear coat and attached with tamper resistant hardware.
Freestanding Sign – Less than 100 Square Feet: Infiltrator Water Technologies
Created by Ruggles Sign, this high-end, eye-catching design reflects the client’s brand and is front and center to their facility in Winchester, Ky. This 9’ x 9’ illuminated cabinet sign is comprised of brushed stainless steel mounting poles and cross members, escutcheon plates and fasteners. It has hidden primary power, fasteners and LEDs. It also has edge-lit acrylic panels with flamed edges.
Wall Sign: Allegiant Stadium – Home of the Las Vegas Raiders
YESCO was contracted to do a significant amount of work at the new Allegiant Stadium, which was completed on July 31, 2020. The rooftop letters reading “Allegiant Stadium” are 51’ in height and span 564’ in length. They are believed to be the largest illuminated letters in Las Vegas (for now). In addition to the rooftop letters, a total of six sets of large illuminated letters were installed at the stadium; four sets outside and two inside. Two sets of 31’ letters spanning 163’ were installed on the elevators and inside the arena, a total of four sets of letters 20’ in height spanning 107’. Two large Raiders shield logos (27’ x 25’) were installed on the training facility along with a large set of traditional letters identifying the facility.
Potpourri: Main Street Eye Care
Sekula Signs designed and manufactured a pair of 4’ H x 12’ W one-piece aluminum eye glasses for Main Street Eye Care in DuBois, Pa. Every detail of the glasses was perfected including the rims, round bridge, temple and temple tip. Each hinge was even set with a flat head screw! The lens glow with RGB LED illumination. “The customer wanted it to look like a pair of glasses that you would actually wear.”
