Diastasis and its VUTEk® printer add color to Athens subway trains

Subway trains in Athens, Greece, have become a brighter and more welcoming method of transportation, thanks to VUTEk® printed Coca-Cola and Organics promotional graphics.

Greek printing company Diastasis produced 1000 sq m of promotional graphics in just five days. Thanks to the UltraVu's high quality print and color, companies were, for the first time, able to take advantage of one of the cities most powerful advertising media, train graphics, seen by millions of passengers each day.

Elena Michalour, Diastasis' Managing Director comments, 'This project was very successful for us and will no doubt be the catalyst for many similar jobs. Our UltraVu® 2360 FC enabled us to print high quality, vibrant graphics that stand out against the dull gray backdrop of the subway. Creating a big impact amongst travelers, the graphics brighten the dark environment and bring character and life to the once nondescript trains.

'More importantly, because the trains are seen in all areas of the city, their graphics are viewed by a much wider audience, increasing the value of our clients' investments against the traditional static billboard. Also, the subway company is also very pleased, as it is now able to enjoy a new, highly profitable, revenue stream.'

Diastasis was not only the printer for this job, but also the project's creator. Having realized the huge promotional opportunities that subway trains provide, its clients needed little convincing of the exposure their products could enjoy.

Elena continues, 'When we presented the idea to Coca-Cola and Organics, they were very keen to take advantage of the opportunity to publicize their products in an unusual way. Having brought our customers onboard, we then had to contact the subway company and local authorities to establish their interest and gain permission to proceed. As this was the first time that an Athens subway train had been wrapped, there were lots of procedures to adhere to and decisions to be made.

Once the necessary approvals were given, Diastasis used its VUTEk® UltraVu® 2360 FC (installed in February 2002) to print the train graphics onto self-adhesive vinyl. Despite the train graphics being the first of its kind for the company, Diastasis encountered no problems at all.

Elena continues, 'Since the installation of the four-color UltraVu® 2360 FC, we have been able to produce high quality graphics with a stability of color unmatched by our competitors. Utilizing the UtraVu's advanced capabilities, we were able to enhance the results of the finished graphics and really bring the subway to life.'

Commenting on its decision to partner VUTEk®, Elena continues, 'We purchased the VUTEk® UltraVu 2360 FC, because we knew that we were buying a high quality product with a strong brand name. Since installing the two-meter printer we have greatly benefited from VUTEk's customer support program. We have also been able to pass on the UltraVu's benefits to customers, by reducing prices and increasing value for money.'

Diastasis specializes in producing vehicle graphics, floor and interior decoration and outdoors advertisements. Its clients include advertising agencies, end users, graphic and interior design companies. Other recent jobs produced using the UltraVu® 2360 FC, include vehicle graphics for Garnier Fructis and in-store graphics for Nike.

Elena concludes, 'Currently, the Greek wide format market is very healthy. Because of this we plan to branch out into other fields and explore new markets.'
