Tell It Like It Is

"A brave man is a man who dares to look the Devil in the face and tell him he is a Devil."
      --- James A. Garfield

I know that I don't need to tell you, dear reader, that in today's world, some people have lost the art of communicating. They either text or post something on social media, hiding behind the computer screen so that they don't have to face their audience. It's a shame too, because there is so much satisfaction to be gained when one learns how to speak to another human being sitting knees to knees interacting with another person. There is great joy in picking up on non-verbal communication and making eye contact with another person.

As business leaders, we must confront others in order to be successful. We must meet with the customer to explain pricing, delays, warranties, and so forth. We must interact with an employee to show them how to properly install or maintain a sign, produce an estimate, or handle a customer. And we must meet with vendors and suppliers to straighten out orders or fix an invoice. We wouldn't get very far in business if we handled all of these via text and Facebook postings.

"Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it."
      --- Ralph Marston

In a world of precious people being offended by just about everything, it is refreshing to meet people who tell it like it is. I'm not talking about people who are just plain mean, but folks who tell the truth without first coating it with some sugar. Real people who tell it like it is are genuine, but unfortunately, rare. Don't be shy in saying "Thank you" and in also letting them know when they've missed the mark.

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
      --- George S. Patton

For us to tell it like it is, we must first know what we are talking about and then trust others who receive our message. For example, when attempting to get a project completed, we should trust our team members to have the know-how to get things done. Since micromanagement boils down to a lack of trust, (if that is the case, it means we didn't hire the right people to begin with), we need let team members know what is needed and then back off.

"The most interesting information comes from children, for they tell all they know and then stop."
      --- Mark Twain

Once we've made our statements, or told it like it is, we need to let things unfold. Team members and others will eventually realize you are a man or woman who shoots straight, says their piece, and then moves on. Remember, employees are watching us. They will eventually mimic our behavior. If we tell it like it is, they too will begin to do the same with our customers, vendors, peers, and others.

"Don't forget to tell yourself positive things daily! You must love yourself internally to glow externally."
      --- Hannah Bronfman

Finally, tell it like it is to yourself. Don't lie or cheat in your self talk. If a situation sucks, tell yourself it sucks and then find a way out, through, or over the issue. When you hit a home run, bask in it. Celebrate it. Tell yourself you rocked on that one. Let's not shilly-shally anymore or let society dictate how we communicate. Let's tell it like it is at all times.
