Do you ever stop what you're doing to ask yourself what you're doing? Sounds odd, I know, but if we get off the merry-go-round just long enough to look at what it is we really do, would we like what we see? Would the progression of our efforts look the same from the outside looking in as it does from the inside? Deep stuff to ponder.
The point is that it is helpful to reflect to see if we are on track for the reasons we got into the business to begin with. It becomes so easy to fit into a groove and then years later not remember why we got into that groove. A good exercise to tackle is to once a year make an effort to examine if your business is what you thought it would be or does it need to be realigned? Perhaps the groove is the wrong groove and it is time to find the right one.

Examining our business will hopefully draw us back to the purpose of our business: mainly to serve others in order to make money. When we lose that focus, the foundation of the business begins to deteriorate and gradually we erode our reasons of why and begin focusing on how.

Looking back on our business and the reason for being provides a fresh perspective and gets us back on track toward priorities. If we are serving others and making money, all is well in the world. But when we lose our focus on serving and look for alternative ways to make money, our footing becomes unstable. This forces us to try harder for the alternative as the foundation of the business continues to crumble.
Realigning within the right groove resets the focus and we now begin to establish creative ways of serving others. Then, poof! The money starts to come in again and the foundation is restored.

We all are prone to getting out of our groove. Sometimes it is due to the mistake of taking our eyes off of our goals, mission, and vision. Other times it is because we might see others bringing in more gold than us and so we attempt to keep with them by trying seemingly easier, more profitable ventures. This keeping up with the Jones' mindset only fails us in the end. Not only do we get completely out of the groove, but we allow our business foundational principles to slip further and further away as well.
It is good to make new, better plans for the business and to seek more products and services to offer as long as we continue to focus on the service. In fact, the wise business leaders do this on a continual basis. However, they still keep serving others in the forefront. It's as if they have an internal mantra repeating over and over again, "Serve others, make money, serve others, make money..."
