"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."
--- Winston Churchill
Some days it is just plain hard to go to work. Yes, I love what I do. I care about providing the best online magazine to the industry that I love. I love mingling and chatting with our sponsors, our readers, our vendors, etc. But, some days the enthusiasm takes a vacation without notice. You know the saying, "Some days a diamond, some days a stone." Most days I am on fire and working like a shiny diamond. But then other days…
I have a theory that our bodies and minds simply go into automatic slumps and it is up to us to gather the strength and rally our enthusiasm back to normal levels. While some days it can be difficult to do, I believe that once we get the momentum going, our automatic enthusiasm mechanisms (AEM) take over. There are even moments when I think we can fake-it-till-we-make-it and our AEM gets going on its own.
"Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."
--- Samuel Ullman
Some of the most successful workplaces are those that have enthusiastic owners, leaders, managers, supervisors, and employees. Once one group of company participants pick up the enthusiasm bug, others tend to follow suit. It only takes one person to get on fire and enthusiastic about a project, about work, about life, to get other team members rallied as well.
"Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes for success."
--- Dale Carnegie
Getting the AEM primed is not up to others in the workplace though. There are those that can bring us down just as they can bring us up. You know the types. They are the bad attitude people that complain about everything and see not a glass half full or half empty, but a dropped glass with broken pieces all over the floor that someone is going to step on and cut open their foot and either catch a deadly disease or bleed to death. Those are the ones that can wreak havoc affecting both moral and production.
"I play to win, whether during practice or a real game. And I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win."
--- Michael Jordan
Businesses known for creating new and innovative products employ enthusiastic people. Think Google, Facebook, and Whole Foods. Businesses that provide great service employ enthusiastic people and create an enthusiastic atmosphere. Think Chick fil A, Amazon.com, and Trader Joes. There must be something to this working with enthusiasm thing.
Why not start this week working more enthusiastically? Then, spread the word and get everyone on board. Help them to get their AEM going.
"Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas."
--- Henry Ford
